Most exporters treat the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) as an annoying administrative hurdle. A simple PDF to check off a list.
It is not. It is a strict legal document governing hazardous cargo.
Shipping lines do not care about your premium white ash. They care about their vessels catching fire in the middle of the ocean. Charcoal is inherently dangerous. If you do not understand the mechanics of your MSDS, you will continue facing sudden rejections, delayed shipments, and massive financial liability.

The UN 1361 Reality Check
Charcoal falls under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. Specifically, it is classified as UN 1361: Carbon, animal or vegetable origin.
By default, shipping lines consider charcoal a Class 4.2 Hazardous Material. This means it is a substance liable to spontaneous combustion.
Your entire goal with the MSDS, and the accompanying lab tests, is to prove your specific briquettes meet the strict exemption criteria. You must prove they are stable, properly cooled, and will not spontaneously ignite inside a 60°C container oven on the equator.

Section 14: Transport Information
This is the exact section the shipping line reads first. It must explicitly state the cargo is “Not restricted as per IMDG Code Special Provision 925.”
If Special Provision 925 is missing, your document is worthless. This provision is the legal loophole that allows charcoal to be shipped as non-hazardous standard cargo, provided it passes the necessary self-heating tests.

A Vanning Certificate is a certified document proving the container was stuffed according to maritime safety standards. It verifies three critical factors:
- Cooling Period: The charcoal was cooled for at least 14 days prior to packing.
- Core Temperature: The internal temperature of the cargo was below 40°C at the time of loading.
- Packaging Integrity: The master boxes are structurally sound and tightly secured to prevent friction.
Your MSDS states the charcoal is safe. The N.4 test proves the charcoal is safe. The Vanning Certificate proves you actually loaded it safely. You need the holy trinity. Missing one piece collapses the entire argument.
