What Is an Extrusion Briquette?
An extrusion briquette is a type of charcoal briquette that is formed by forcing a charcoal mixture through a die under high pressure, creating a continuous solid shape that is then cut into desired lengths. This method, known as extrusion, produces uniform, cylindrical or hexagonal briquettes—often with a central hole to enhance airflow and burning efficiency.
Extrusion briquettes are widely used in barbecue, restaurant cooking, and industrial heating due to their durability, long burn time, and consistent heat output.
How Extrusion Briquettes Are Made
Step 1: Material Preparation
Fine charcoal powder, usually from coconut shells or hardwood, is blended with a natural binder and sometimes a small amount of water to improve cohesion.
Step 2: Extrusion Molding
The mixture is fed into an extrusion machine, where it is compacted and pushed through a die. The die determines the briquette’s shape—commonly hexagonal, round, or square—with or without a center hole.
Step 3: Cutting and Sizing
As the material exits the extruder, it is cut into uniform lengths, typically between 10 to 30 centimeters, depending on the product’s end use.
Step 4: Drying and Curing
The briquettes are dried to reduce moisture and harden the structure, ensuring they are strong enough for packaging and transport.
